While we're known for hosting North America's Largest Cross Country ski race in February, the American Birkebeiner, did you know we host events all year round?!  

The American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation (ABSF) is a non-profit organization which has 4,500 volunteer opportunities annually, to provide great support to the Participants, Partners, Spectators and Staff at the American Birkebeiner events.  We greatly appreciate you, and your interest in lending a hand.

Volunteer shifts for individual events usually open about 3 months prior to that event.

Did you know, the Staff of the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation also helps manage the Lumberjack World Championships (LWC)?!

LWC is a separate non-profit organization, showcasing the finest competition in timber sports.  LWC was founded in 1963 by Hayward's own Tony Wise, who also founded the American Birkebeiner in 1973.   The ABSF Staff are contracted to help manage the logistics of the LWC, with Registration, Retail, Sponsorship, and of course, Volunteers.

THE AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER SKI FOUNDATION REQUIRES ALL VOLUNTEERS TO AGREE TO THIS CODE OF CONTDUCT TO SAFEGUARD THEMSELVES AND OTHERS AT AMERICAN BIRKEBEINER EVENTS.
DO
• Treat everyone with respect regardless of gender, ethnicity, disability, sexuality, or religious beliefs
• Look after yourself and others.
• Fulfill the expected volunteer role including duties, working days, and working times. Being on-site by the shift start time.
• Follow rules and all reasonable instructions at the event, from Staff or Race Chief
• Follow local laws and respect local customs
• Follow all U.S. Center For SafeSport protocol, when possible.

• Bring any concerns or issues to the attention of Birkie Staff or Race Chief on site or report to the Birkie Office, as soon as possible.

DON’T
• Put yourself or others at risk
• Do anything that could cause harm to people, animals, property or the environment
• Behave in any way that is inappropriate, illegal or could jeopardize the work of Birkebeiner Events and its Partners.
• Be absent without prior communication
• Discriminate in any way
• Display any form of aggression or abuse to others
• Have any inappropriate physical, verbal, electronic or online contact with others

All Volunteers of the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation events and programs are subject to random Background Checks, performed by Verified First, in conjunction with our volunteer software, Volunteer Local. Any volunteer with a negative or questionable background check will not be allowed to volunteer.

Any negative action by an American Birkebeiner Volunteer will result in their immediate removal and expulsion from the event. Depending upon the severity of the actions, may cause the Volunteer to be banned from volunteering at future or all of the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation events.
